6 month update
First let me apologize for the lack of posts lately. No excuse other than by the time I can actually get on the computer at night my brain is mush.
Anyway….
Yesterday was the official six month home mark. Unbelievable in some ways and in others it seems like this has been our life forever. I am happy to STILL be able to report that all three boys seem to be adjusting well. No major problems and we deal with the little ones as they come.
Kenson has jumped from the 25th percentile for height & weight to the 65th percentile. He has his locs now and loves them. To me he looks years older, not just six months older. He still struggles with affection and has more of a flat set of emotions but talks freely about his past and his present so we are making progress. He is an amazing soccer player and loves to read. Kenson can’t wait to go to kindergarten and ride the bus. He has the best laugh and we are hearing it more and more as time goes on.
Kenzie went from the 28th percentile to the 60th and while he is still a tiny, skinny little thing he is not AS tiny as he was when he got here. He is eating much better and trying all kinds of foods. Rice still remains his comfort. We are really working on teaching Kenz how to be his own person. He has obviously identified himself through his twin for so long that it is hard for him to do his own thing. He is super affectionate and the homebody of the three. Kenz LOVES to talk and talk and talk. He was the most adventurous on our beach vacation and took to the ocean like a fish. All three boys learned to swim without swimmies on our vacation. Kenzie & Kenson have even mastered the diving board and deep end. He also loves soccer and most especially likes to play goalie. Kenzie speaks often about Haiti and his life there which in my book is a good thing.
Kenley has also grown from the 25th to the 65th percentile. He eats almost anything and lots of it. He remains the most easy going of the three which is a good thing! His english has improved tremendously since my last update and we don’t hear any more creole at all unless we ask. All three have taken to teaching us the “bad” words and phrases lately which makes us laugh! Kenleys most favorite past time is by far riding in our Jeep. He craves alone time and we try to give it as much as possible. We have come to realize that his brothers really speak for him all the time and he needs to be away from them to really learn how to express himself. He is a cuddler and just in the last few days I have heard him say “I love you” unsolicited to his dad and I. Kenley will be attending preschool in the afternoons this fall.
As a family we really seem to have found our mojo. There is less chaos ( well less for us anyway). Less behavior issues all around. We took our first major vacation to Ocracoke and had a blast. The boys traveled so well, better than the whiny adults and teenagers. We all just are able to transition and deal with change so much better than just a few weeks ago. There are still times where I feel life is surreal but in a good way. It is not at all possible for me to put into words the love that I have for all my children. It compares to nothing and comes directly from above. I am SO proud and blessed to be able to raise these boys and so excited about what the future holds for all of us.
Ocracoke, what can I say. It did not let us down. We had perfect weather, even better than normal, no humidity and 80′s everyday. The ocean was balmy, calm and crystal clear this year. All 5 kids enjoyed the water. And Pappa Paul spent more time in the ocean this year than ever before. The boys learned to boogie board and Kenley could not get enough of playing in the sand. The pool at our house was a godsend and like I said all 3 boys learned to swim. Our daily routine went something like; breakfast on the porch, pooltime, lunch beach for the afternoon, followed by more pooltime, dinner around 7, nightly icecream trip and great conversation. We laughed more than should be legal. The older kids enjoyed the freedom of the island. Shopping, eating and jeeping it on the beach whenever they wanted. We had a delicious fish fry one night eating some of the 60 Spanish Mackeral that the men caught on their fishing trip. We enjoyed introducing the island to new friends and sharing it once again with long time friends and family. So happy the Simon and O’Mara family joined us this year! Kenzie summed up everyones feeling when he said ” I want to go home, get grandma & grandpa & the dogs and live on Ocracoke Island FOREVAH!” Yes Kenzie, me too!!!!!!!
The rest of our summer is a little less crazy and a little more relaxing. The twins are enjoying soccer camp this week, last week all three of them attended their first VBS and really enjoyed it. We are pool jumping at all our friends homes with pools and really looking forward to hopefully having our own next year. The boys are begging for a “camping night” in our tent so that is on our list, the annual Scottish Fest is this weekend and we still haven’t gotten them to a baseball game. (two rainouts!)
On the adoption front, I can just say UHG! Hopefully I will have something to report in the next week as we did contact an adoption lawyer but the just of it still comes down to money and the large amount needed and small amount we have. Frustrating!!!!! Our government wants money, Haiti needs money, the lawyer wants money. What we really need is a short term loan( but we have tapped out that possibility) so we can finalize the adoption and then get the tax credit to pay for finalizing the adoption. It is a vicious cycle that keeps me up at night. Please pray!
I think I covered enough for now. Leaving you all with the very first Rumo Family Photos!!!!(took us almost 6 months to get but it was worth the wait, thanks Steph!)
